Three Facts About Adoption in Florida

As a family law firm who handles adoption in Florida, we have heard many things said about adoption, some are completely inaccurate while others are misconceptions. Although laws vary from state to state, these are some of the myths we want to correct with facts so you make a better-informed decision regarding whether adoption is the right path for your family.

Myth #1 – Adoption is Not Affordable for the Average Family

The fact is that the cost for an adoption in Florida varies widely. Private adoptions and international adoptions are generally the most expensive costing $30,000 or more. Known party adoptions and adoption from foster care can cost as little as $1,500. And, most families can take advantage of a tax credit that offsets at least a portion of their adoption expenses.

Myth #2 – All Kids Available for Adoption Have Something Wrong with Them

Although there are children available for adoption in Florida and nationwide with mental and physical handicaps, not all children available for adoption do. It is possible to adopt a healthy newborn just as it is possible to adopt a healthy teenager. When you speak with a social worker or adoption agency, you need to let them know what issues you feel capable of dealing with and what you are not comfortable with so they can find you a good fit. This goes for domestic and international adoptions of all types.

Myth #3 – An Open Adoption Means the Birth Parents Get Visitation

Psychologists have found that adoptive children who are aware they are adopted and have the opportunity to know where they came from tend to be better adjusted than those who find out as adults by mistake that they were adopted. However, an open adoption does not have to mean visitation. You and the birth parents can define what level of “openness” works for you both. In some cases, it does mean visiting with one another. For others, it means being friends on social media or exchanging letters and photos a few times a year.
