Your Divorce Attorney Can Help Even After the Divorce

Even if your divorce has been finalized for years, you may still have a need for your divorce attorney. This is especially true in divorces that include children. Here are some other things a divorce lawyer may be able to assist you with months or years after the divorce is final.

Modification

The most common type of modification is to child support. However, there are other types of modification which may also be needed. For instance, you may need to change your time-sharing agreement or custody agreement. Usually when there is a change to the amount of time a child spends with one parent, child support should also change. You and your divorce attorney may request a modification regardless of if the change will result in you paying more or less. There are also many reasons you may desire to update your spousal support. Most commonly, reasons for such an update include changes to financial or marital status. This may also include living arrangements of the party receiving the support.

Request of Court-Mandated Therapy

A judge may order psychiatric therapy even if you or your divorce attorney has not requested it. However, you and your divorce lawyer can also ask that the court order therapy for your child or former spouse, even if they do not agree with the idea. One of the most common types of court mandated therapy is reunification therapy. This is common when one parent has not spent time with a child in the recent past, and the child needs time to adjust to the parent in their life. If the other parent of your child has recently requested access in their life, reunification therapy may be a good option for your family.

File a Restraining Order

Over the last few years, the divorce rate in the United States has increased. In some cases, this is due to domestic violence or drug and alcohol abuse. This has led to an increase in restraining orders against spouses and former spouses. If you feel you are in immediate danger, contact the police. Once you are safe, call your divorce attorney so you may discuss a restraining order.
